9 Fashionably Cool Living Room Color Palettes

You have seen them everywhere this fall, showing up in fashion, housewares and home interiors — colours on the trendy side of the spectrum, such as vibrant greens, bold blues, lush violets and steely grays.

But few people can afford to, nor would want to, completely change our living space with each passing color trend. I always encourage customers to go for low-intensity neutrals for things that are costly or complicated to redo. In the living area these things are furniture, floors, the fireplace surround and elaborate custom window treatments.

But when it concerns the relatively inexpensive elements in a living space — paint, easy window treatments, pillows and other accessories that are low-cost — by all means take the plunge and invest in a few things in your beloved fashionable colors. If you adhere to colors you like, then you are going to want them around for a good long while.

Check out this variety of stunning cool-hued living and family rooms, together with sample colour palettes inspired by each space.

Gray continues to be my go-to neutral for a while today. I find it even more crisp and clean looking than ubiquitous beige. But grey lacks the heat of beige, so try pairing it with warm timber tones or a warm accent hue, such as the yellow-green utilized here. I recently made a room layered in various shades of moderate to light grays, and it has a supersophisticated vibe. With a base of grey tones in a space, you may add a dash of another colour you want, even beige.

I know I said to stick with neutral colors when selecting furniture, but there’s just something so fabulous about these magenta-hued club chairs. I love them! But notice that the magenta is the only vibrant hue in the space. If these chairs needed to compete with a green wall along with a blue sofa, they would quickly go from awesome to overload.

So go ahead and pick up furniture in your beloved bold hue in case you see a piece you just need to get, but edit the other colours in the space so that the intensely hued element remains the star.

I love combinations of green and blue, specifically watery blues and bright, shocking greens. They just play off each other so well. And although they are trendy colours, they feel inviting and pleasant together — perhaps because we associate them with nature, the ocean and the sky.

Green and red can be tricky colours to pull together. They’re opposite each other on the colour wheel, which means that they offer you the maximum contrast to one another. One trick to soften the contrast would be to use less extreme shades of both colors.

This wall is a very pure green, but it is a fairly light shade of it. The reddish here is quite dark and lush, more of a maroon colour — that may function as neutral. Also, because the colours are used for various items in the area (wall furniture and paint), they won’t conflict. This unexpected palette works really nicely in this trendy, modern space.

For people who love light, clean, airy spaces, you can not go wrong with shades of white in your walls, ceilings and furnishings. Nonetheless, it’s wonderful to inject some colour to liven things up.

If you do, why not go bold? The grounding black and vibrant orange colors work well with the lighter blue shades here. This example also effectively uses colors opposite each other on the colour wheel (orange and blue). They work well together because the blue is kept lighter and toned down.

I usually feature quite bold colors in my palettes, but I will definitely enjoy a milder approach. In fact, bright, vibrant colour can occasionally distract from intriguing artwork, accessories, furniture or a wonderful view out the window. This living area feels light full of airy and inviting. Darker colors serve as little squares here and there — perfect for somebody who wants more toned-down, neutral colors. The harmonious mix of gentle grey, blue and green makes for a relaxing and sophisticated living space.

More soothing grays and blues, but this example we also have pieces of crisp white and deep, dark chocolate brown for an extremely elegant, modern palette.

As much as I love working with grey, another neutral I’m turning to increasingly more is navy blue. Softer than black, it still offers drama and plays nicely with all other colours. As an accent color via pillows and the window remedy here, it creates a wonderful triad with the lighter gray-blue along with the olive green.

Don’t neglect your outdoor living spaces when it comes to injecting trendy colour. The days may be getting shorter and cooler, but why not plan ahead for summer and spring? Fall is, after all, a good time to pick up outdoor furniture and furnishings in a discount.

This distance abounds with trendy colour. And because the vibrant colours are expressed through cloth and paint, it would not be that difficult to change them down the street.
