Elegant Carmel Beach Bungalow

It’s always refreshing to see a coastal home that has not overdone the beach theme, and this is just what designer Regan Baker failed in this beach bungalow at Carmel, California. The customer wanted her home to reflect the surrounding beach town, but in a contemporary manner. Baker centered on a balance of endings to create a subtle coastal feel.

Big, comfy upholstered seating makes the family room a great gathering place. Baker was careful to take storage into account to keep the room neat and clean — the television can be saved away behind the custom cupboard.

Baker based the property’s design on natural components such as shells, silk, cotton and grass cloth. Using natural components is a part of what constitutes her signature appearance. “They help create thickness and deliver in a natural yet comfy element to a space,” Baker says.

Paints were retained fairly neutral to signify the sand outside. However, the master bedroom was designed to symbolize the water with a soft blue.

Board and batten walls bring in a different layer of texture to the home. The appearance is frequently used in traditional beach cottages and adds to the feeling of the beach environment.

The home originally had carpet, vinyl windows and an obsolete kitchen complete with butterfly tiles on the backsplash. Initially, the strategy was to simply upgrade the space. But after the customers discussed maybe retiring here, the scope of work changed.

A structural wall has been removed in the kitchen in order to add a bigger entryway. The ceilings were raised for a open texture, and new windows create the sea view a focal point.

A seashell shape is represented in various spots throughout the home, such as in this lattice-pattern rug. Together with the farmhouse sink and bridge tap, the pattern retains this kitchen style classic but refreshing. The shelving to the left of the sink opens up the space without sacrificing too much cupboard storage.

White bamboo seats at the dining room are just another great textural element; they keep the dining room from feeling overly dark and thick.

All of the art in the residence is subjective for a contemporary feel. Baker chose bits in ocean-inspired colours to keep the coastal vibe.

The homeowners got the beach theme out of their systems by going a little more literal in smaller spaces, such as the powder room. The sconces were chosen as a contemporary interpretation of a seashell and the starfish cupboard pulls (seen in mirror) are a fun, whimsical touch.

The house’s soft and neutral colour palette has been carried into the bathroom, along with contrasting metals. The mix of lace and oil-rubbed bronze leaves the space more intriguing, and also the dark wicker mirror helps tie in the darker colors found in the rest of the home.
