Creative mother Jillian Woods resides in a house she explains as”a very typical Texas, brick ranch style house” out Ft. Worth, Texas, and it’s precisely what she desired. “When we bought this house, I wanted to choose something unpolished (but maybe not dented) and polish it up. All of us dream of the great airy, spacious house with 10-foot ceilings, but in fact most of us live in homes like mine. Consequently, if I can’t have my dream house, I’ll make my dreams fit into my residence.” Woods shares her projects and finds on her blog, The Virginia House, in which she says,”hopefully I can inspire a person to choose the’ordinary’ and make it amazing for less!” Following is a glance at her smart projects and inspiring results.

We are going to begin in the kitchenwhich originally had brick-red walls and natural-colored contractors’-grade cabinets. The identical week the family moved in, Woods got busy painting the cupboards, eliminating a number of the top cabinet doors, and adding rustic pieces, transforming the room into an airy cabin kitchen.

Woods eliminated the doors onto the top cabinets to open things up, seizing the chance to create another layer of texture and visual interest with white china, clear glassware and baskets for loose items.
Woods painted her cabinets with Caromal Colours Paint. She says,”If you’ve got sleek,’not actual wood’ cabinets then this material is wonderful! It sticks to anything” The upper cabinets are”Wisteria,” the cabinets are”Cobblestone.” She also scored the cabinet hardware on eBay.

Here is the family room, in which the children play where Woods sews. It was flexible and kid-friendly, therefore that she kept things soft, light, and impartial.
Where to start when supplying an whole property? “Our furniture is pretty much from Craigslist,” Woods says. “I love that site. If I can find an ugly bit for cheap and make it look great again, then I’m happy.” She mixes her Craigslist scores with antiques she discovers at favorite regional haunts.

“I still have plank-filled dreams for this room, but it has come a long way already,” Woods says. The room has a wide selection of textures, including some distressed pieces which add patina design to the room.

The mix of textures, distressed finishes, Craigslist discovers and classic pieces continues to the family room. A grid of botanicals picks up on the green paint onto the farmhouse-style coffee table.
Tip: If your room is lacking architectural details, add them through classic doors, shutters and windows.

In that exact same vein, blink and you might miss it. Woods likes to rotate in new finds, and to resell a lot of them when she is ready for a change. Who knows this tablescape will look like next week?

This room belongs to her two oldest sons, Beau and Jack. “They’re cowboys every day of their lives (although we are living in city ), and I believed it would be very fitting to give them a room that actually says who they are and what they love,” Woods says. The area’s Texas country style is enriched by means of a barn celebrity (Texas stars have 5 things ), red lanterns, and of course, cowboy hats!

Woods enhanced the”simple and dull” bedroom with the addition of board-and-batten trimming work, which prevents the walls from being overrun by the bold blue paint.
Tip: when choosing a height for this type of trimming work, think about the quantity of room you want for hanging artwork above it.
This window is one of Woods’ oldest finds. The window”began me on my entire, primitive, antique journey,” she says. “I have put different pictures inside and hung it different places, but I love it where it’s now. I just Googled for older cowboy photographs, printed themand stuck them onto the panes with tape. Easy art.”

Woods lasted the board-and-batten siding to the boys’ bathroom. A sign Woods created from an older board inspired the style of the room, which she dubs”vintage shore”

Previously a dark and obsolete builder’s special, today the bathroom is crisp, relaxing and airy.

Woods outfitted the infant’s room with furniture she already had, repainting everything to create the soft and light appearance.

How to keep painted edges neat:“Seal off the exterior of your taped off stripes with paint before you really begin painting your contrasting shade. It keeps the paint from bleeding and makes your traces a whole lot more crisp and clean,” Woods says.

In addition to all that painting, Woods created the bedding after falling in love with some she saw in a photo. “When I look back at all I did in that room afterward, I believe I should have been high on pregnancy hormones or just plumb crazy,” she says.

Before I got to understand Woods, I assumed this mobile was some $300 number from Anthropologie. I had been about $296 off.
“I have desired a mobile since I had my first child five years ago, but I hated all the ones that I saw in the shops,” Woods says. “I kind of combined a lot of ideas together. The birds’ tattered look was born out of laziness since I didn’t want to turn them out after sewing. The entire thing cost me about four bucks!” Woods hung all the magical creatures and objects out of an easy sewing hoop.

The master bedroom and the nursery have hot neutrals, lots of light and soft textures in common. It’s a design formula that is appropriate for all rooms and all ages. An antique shutter adds an architectural component and patina design to the relaxing escape.

The Vintage Bricoleurs created the grain sack pillow for her. The”W” is for Woods, along with the year on the bottom is the year she and her husband had been married.

Finally, let us move across the lawn to the poolhouse, which Woods infused with coastal style. She says”to me coastal isn’t just relaxing, but happy and sunny looking. It makes me think of this beach/coast, and that’s always a fantastic idea”
The window seat shops all the chemicals for your pool. It”was the first thing that I ever built on my own and I have to admit I’m somewhat proud of it. Mainly because it’s still standing after a year!”

With a small amount of assistance from the guys in the family (she says she’d 75 percent of it herself), Woods made and installed these boards, which she generated by cutting into strips the original hardboard that lined the poolhouse. They include an instant beach-shack vibe into the little outbuilding.
